Much as in the same way a man is inspired to eat a yoghurt because it is in the fridge, so I was inspired to take-up painting after gate-crashing another artist's private view. I had gotten rather drunk on free booze and wandered around using the word 'juxtaposition' far too frequently. I then saw a canvas splashed with a couple of pigments of oil and after laughing myself silly because it was priced at over a grand I thought aloud, 'I could do that!' I was then politely ejected from the show. |
The following morning I awoke feeling a little ill, but I recalled the previous evening's show and how I had thought, 'I could do that!' I then remembered how, after my ejection from the show I had met a girl in a bar who would later describe me as rather irritating and crass. I put that out of my mind, and wandered instead to an art shop. |
I have a keen interest in modern, abstract and impressionist art, and since I cannot afford a Van Gogh or a Mondrian of my own I paint each of my canvases with the single objective that I must be able to enjoy them myself. It is arguably-evident I do not paint to be appreciated by 'the art world', but I believe it is entirely the prerogative of the individual whether they see any merit in my work. |
